We have all had relative's die and watched the free fall fighting over what was the deceased left behind. I could make a list and hope my wife got everything to who I want to get it. But I have choose to give my guns out before I pass away. This way there is no hurt feeling ,confusion or mistakes made.
The first gun I gave to my nephew was an H and R pardoner 20 ga. for his son when he got older . I gave my brother my Belgium made Browning16ga he broke down in tears when he opened the case and saw it. I have a single shot 22 Glenfield 10 I am putting a red dot sight on for 2 of the grandkids to learn with. Plus a model 25 ,7 shot is getting the same sight for another grandson. I still have a good many more to give to the kids . What I m trying to do is have the gun in good shape and ammo for it when I give it to them.
The first of the week Harry at Self Sufficient Mountain Living. had a link for 8mm in striper clips from AIM. I ordered 5 boxes of them (they look like new) but are date 11/53 . I doubt I could shoot my 8 mm Mauser in the shape I'm in it would break my shoulder . Wal mart is 39.95 plus tax for a box of 20 I got 75 in stripers for 45.17 tax shipping and all. Just to give away!
I have other things besides my guns I am finding homes for. The more I get done the less the wife will have to worry with.

Prepper Supply list ? Gold rush 1898
Ok the new season of Gold Rush is on cable I like to watch it. Last week a comment on another blog had this list of food. It is what the Canadian government required a miner to have to enter the Yukon for one year. This is a minimum for a year expecting hunting and fishing to be added by the miner.
THIS IS PER PERSON!!!!
FOOD:
200 pounds of bacon (for oil)
400 pounds of flour
85 pounds assorted dried fruit
50 pounds cornmeal
35 pounds rice
24 pounds coffee
5 pounds tea
100 pounds sugar
25 pounds fish
15 pounds soup vegetables
50 pounds oatmeal
50 pounds dried potatoes
50 pounds dried onions
25 cans butter
100 pounds beans
4 dozen tins condensed milk
15 pounds salt
1 pound pepper
8 pounds baking powder
2 pounds baking soda
1/2 pound mustard
3/4 pound ginger
36 pounds yeast cakes
(Yukon/Klondike gold rush stampeder’s supply list, 1898
This list alone is over 1200 lb. So as you look over your own lists keep this one in mind. Me personally I know I don't have this many calories per person. The equipment list make interesting reading to. If your like me you will be in better shape on gear than these list .
Jim Dankin over at http://bisonprepper.blogspot.com/ always says most Prepper's are long on gear and guns but will starve when the MRE's run out. Here are a couple of links of complete lists.

What non food items would you want if the economy crashed .
Its late I shouldn't be doing a post of this kind this late . But if you knew the dollar was dead and inflation and shortages were going to be everyday life what items would you buy. Skip food, guns and ammo. Think about no gas, empty shelves, rolling black outs, Rationing of every thing . Its a real possibility, with so few major retailers a debit card could become a ration card .
I sited the books 299 day in a comment from yesterday as a good example of what the free market would be like. All savings and investments confiscated allotments based on job and loyalty levels. Use a realistic amount like 1000$ and see what gaps need plugged in on hand items. I am still thinking and adjusting my wish list but here is a start.
A 100 watt solar panel 150$
1500 watt inverter 150$
A 7 speed bike with flat proof tires used 40$ + tires
Wood heater 0 homemade
Seeds and fertilizer 50$
5 more 20 lb. propane cylinders used and refilled 125$
This short list is about 600$ The list is not complete or a doomsday list its stuff that has everyday uses. Between camping and hobbies I am in fair shape but everyone has gaps. A economic crash may or may not be the end of life as we know it . None reading this were alive in the depression and most would not cope well if it happens. Just something to consider .

Happy new year.
I wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year.At this time of year people are always making resolutions about losing weight , drinking ,smoking, and other things in their life that they want to change. That fine I have made them, some I have even kept till January the 6th.
This year I will be skipping RESOLUTIONS ! In place I will have Goals. I know its kind of the same thing but a goal is a place one want to be at some point in the new year. With oil crashing and gas along with it .The stock market going up. Gold and silver falling, Inflation up ,only 6 out of 10 people working. I feel time is short before Something Big and Bad will happen .No not next week but in the next 12 to 24 months .
1 find and fill holes in long term food storage !
2 increase fuel storage gas and propane
3 learn more on food storage cooking
4 finish home repairs and yard work
5 add to ammo before it disappears again.
These are just a start . oh yea #6 is lose weight and eat healthier. Its an annually lie I had to add it in. Happy New Year

survivalism trash talk
Last post was to make you think about what risks trash could put you and your prep's in.The disposal of packaging is as important as disposal of human waste. Everyone situation is different but you do need to have a plan so that no one knows where it came from.
Cans need to be crushed or cut and flattened.
Cartons and bags need to be broke down
Bottles need to be reused or shattered and bagged
A spot needs to be set aside for burying what cant be reused
At present i burn most of our trash. After SHTF i will sort and bury it.Last week i came in from burning the trash my wife asked me what i was cooking? She said it smelled good,I asked what did she think it smelled like she said fry ed chicken.I then informed her it was 2 bags of garbage. It was grease she had put in one bag from chicken wings. The smell of burning trash can carry a long way just like a wood fire.
This is just one of those things we take for granted trash is bagged and then disappears. You better have a plan, for sanitation and secrecy.

Full house of kids/dogs
Sorry i haven't posted any more of the trailer build but i have had a full house. My step daughter and her dog have been staying with us my son drifted back home and everyone we know has come by to visit for a day here and there.Today we had 4 of our daughters my son ,my mother and 4 dogs and the grand son here!!
The trailer is fully blacked in and dry.I have lots of pics to get on here as soon as i have time.It has turned out nice but i have yet to pull it down the road to see if it will pull OK.If it pulls OK it is a camper if it doesn't it will go to the back yard as my man cave/ prepping storage.Last few weeks i have noticed a lot of stuff i had put up scattered around the house.I have to regather up my flashlights DVD player, lanterns and a few other odds and ends the kids have borrowed plus get some batteries to replace the raided ones.
I guess its my fault for having the stuff handy.I need to put some of it in the basement no one but me goes down there. It,s a shame that i have to hide it to have it when its needed. And no borrowing my flashlight because you cant find yours isn't a good reason CLEAN YOUR ROOMS i have gave you 3 already.
After the last 2 weeks i still love our kids but i am tired of their company!!! I know prepping is about family but some times it feels like DARWIN is telling me I'm wasting effort. As soon as the 4th of july weekend is done im going to the beach i need it i deserve it and NO kids!!!!

What the term TEOTWAWKI realy mean to you vs your kids
We have all read this term and in our mind an image appears. Its different to everyone. Some think of no electricity no gas for cars nothing that we use without thinking everyday. Now i got to thinking for my kids it would take just returning to the 70s for them to think the world had ended.Lets just look at the changes to everyday life in 40 years.
1. A 19 in B&W TV vs 55 in 1080dpi plasma
2 3 channels on a good day vs 280 channels on cable
3 2 dials to change channels vs a remote control {do we miss the butt crack of the channel changer]
4 pong video game was the bomb vs Xbox PlayStation's
5 the commode 64 and tandy1000 vs the laptop or net book
6 5in floppies vs flash drives
7 rotary phone vs cellphone
8 notes on the fridge vs texts
9 110 cameras vs 10 mpix camera function
10 going to the library vs the Internet.
11 writing a paper letter vs an e mail
12 cash vs a card
13 a paper map vs map quest or GPS
14 a record or 8 track vs i tune or mp3
15 using the stove oven vs a microwave
OK writers block is setting in but the list is verrry long between anyone 45 and up and our kids under 30.Give it some thought to us going back to the 70s would be easy sure we would miss what was gone but it wouldn't be mind altering.Think of our kids it would seem like they were in a totally different world. To anyone a change back to 40 years before they were born is TEOTWAWKI. It may be that the only ones that can adjust are those that feel they were born in the wrong century.Me personally i love history and reading how they did things in the 1800s and i also read what people in 3rd world countries find benefit's them the most as far as modern tecknowledge. To survive after a TEOTWAWKI event the bottom rung in the world may be the ones that do best. The best we can hope for is that MAD MAX is short lived.
Stop and think where in time your TEOTWAWKI is.Mine is around 1930 .

Have you made a spring to-do list
It has been a weird weather week around here.First of the week was clouds of pollen blowing everywhere then rain followed by 2 very nice sunny days{the BBQ sold great }now its rainy and cold again.When you don't have a regular job the weather plays a big part in what you get to do for income and play .The first of the week i finally modified my smoker by adding a grill to the front of it.I had a 250 gallon steel tank that i got at the scrap yard for 30 cents a pound last fall{still was 90$}.Got the doors cut and hinges and the whole thing mounted and welded in place for a 100$.Now if it sounds like a lot you should see what a 5ft long 3 ft wide grill trailer mounted grill sells for on E bay or Craigs list. I have a 8 ft 3ft wide tank that i think i will be working on in a month or so{mabe more}. I may sell it just because i need the money{a profit of 1000 or more}in the emergency fund.Been looking around the yard at all the projects i have half finished and some that just need to be done.Some are just my labor so they go to the top of my list others require funding to complete.The ones that need money spent will be costed and prioritized by weather they make or save money or will get the wife to leave me alone.Guess which one goes to the top of my list?After the list is made I'm looking at it thinking it would be easier to get a job and pay some of it to be done but i wont ill get it done in time.One example i use to motivate me is why pay anyone 75$ an hour to work on my truck.I have never made over 16$ an hour why work for 5 hour to pay a man for his 1 it may take me 3 but still a bargain even with scraped knuckles a lot of cursing . I always learn a little more about the truck.Right now i better get outside and help plant some tulips for the wife if i don't she will plant them in the middle of the yard to spite me.If its dry tomorrow i have to bush hog a lady's back yard. Already have a project for that pay a front walkway to the cars.NO JOB IS A LOT OF WORK.:}
