Survivalism Trash Talk Part 1

Yesterday i was in the back burning the trash. We use a 55 gallon burn drum to dispose of the garbage here at home.Rural pickup runs almost 20$ a month around here i go 2 the dump every 6 to 8 weeks and empty the burn barrels for 8$.Every time i go to burn i fish out the cans that was in the trash from before. In regular times we have a lot of cans.To cut down on the bulk i crush them and throw them in a bag till its time for the dump.Burnt tin cans are easier to crush than just emptied. As i was doing this chore i looked around and wondered if the SHTF how many more cans there would be!

Now most peppers have a large number of can goods in there food storage.I have read a lot of blogs on food storage but i have never seen any one write about the trash.Have you thought about it?Look at your food storage how many cans will you have to open per day to feed your family?Do you have any idea what your going to do with the cans, have you ever tried to crush a # 10 can ?I have its not easy.Would it be safe where you live to burn your garbage in a SHTF situation?Do you have room to store your waste boxes cans, bottles and other packaging. Will putting bags on the street and risk someone knowing you have food or store them in the corner of your property and risk your families lives?

  1. I would crush them and bury them in the crawl space as long as I could. For the next cans, they could be flattened and used for siding or roofing for the chicken pen or dog house after they looked sort of old.

    1. Both good ideas a word of advise on the big cans you have to cut both ends out. It just struck me as odd that i have read every aspect of prepping except taking out the trash.:)

  2. I'll do what people in the mountains did for centuries. They just found a gully or ravine near their house and threw their garbage in there. Today people sift through these heaps and make good money by selling the old bottles and things they find in there.

  3. Gary, I don't think garbage would be an issue when we're up to our necks in SHTF. I grew up like you burning our trash in a 55 gallon drum. It still is surprising how it burns down to simple ashes that can be spread in the garden etc. A lot of cans can be an issue but we used a sledge hammer to flatten them plus we used a lot of home canned food so we had very little metal cans to deal with.

    1. Mike my point was to make some one think.Burning trash can smell like food and carrys for miles.Baged trash shows what you have.I plan on crushing and burial.every one wants there food storage to be secrete. without a plan for trash is advertising.
